Beyond Clinic? Developing the next generation of Legal Activists

Open Seminar: : 17th November 2021 @ 14:00-15:30 CET

This year's 3rd Annual Student Law Clinic Global Day of Action for Climate Justice will see thousands of law clinic students around the world consider the issue of plastics, the environment and the role of law in addressing the problems caused by excessive consumption of plastic. In part the day is about clinic students informing themselves about the issues from a multitude of perspectives - historical, scientific, legal, even artistic. But equally it is about showing students the power they hold as future leaders to drive change, however small that change might seem at a local level.

This seminar (online, 17th November @ 14:00 CET) will bring together clinicians - students and practitioners - from across Europe to discuss the role of Clinic in empowering law students to use their legal skills and knowledge beyond the confines of the university law clinic to fight for environmental justice in their communities. To what extent should a university law clinic be equipping their students to become legal activists? Does this task require a different approach to Clinic work? What kinds of skills and activities might be needed to facilitate legal activism? What are the potential risks and rewards?
